Your face toner questions answered

What does a face toner do?

A face toner is used to help absorb excess dirt, oil, makeup and any other debris that may clog pores. Toners can be used as an alternative way to cleanse the skin on the face when frequent washing may be irritating for those with sensitive skin.

How often should you use a facial toner?

The frequency of using a facial toner depends on the ingredients in the toner, skin type, and the purpose of the toner. Face toners for sensitive skin containing gentle and soothing ingredients may be used up to 2 times daily in the morning and/or evening. If you have sensitive skin and are using a toner for face with active ingredients such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid, you can start by using a toner 2-3 times a week until you’ve gradually built up a tolerance for everyday use.

How do you apply toner?

Soak a small cotton pad with the toner and gently wipe your face with the cotton pad. Avoid rubbing and scrubbing as this may be irritating and worsen dry, sensitive skin. Wipe each area of your face once and avoid repeatedly wiping in one area. Follow up a facial toner with a gentle facial moisturizer that is non-comedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores).

Should you use a face toner if you have dry skin?

For those with dry skin, fragrance-free toners with gentle and hydrating ingredients may be used. It is important to discuss with your dermatologist which ingredients are more suitable for your skin. A rule of thumb is to start by using a toner for face 2-3 times a week followed by a moisturizer until you’ve gradually built up a tolerance for everyday use.
