Yes, there is a difference. Dry skin occurs when there is a lack of oil or lipids in the top layer of the skin. Dehydrated skin occurs when there is a lack of water in the top layer of the skin (also referred to as the stratum corneum). Individuals with dehydrated skin may have an oily appearance, but have a dull complexion, accentuation of skin lines and may show signs of premature aging (i.e. fine lines, wrinkles and furrows). In contrast to dry skin, dehydrated skin typically does not itch or feel uncomfortable.

The first step in addressing dry skin is avoiding or minimizing exposure to potential triggers for dry skin, such as hot water, fragrance, and skin exfoliants. Avoid the use of topical products containing numerous natural botanicals which may worsen dry skin.

Moisturize! Hydrating, repairing, and maintaining the skin barrier are essential. Formulas with niacinamide, ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, vitamin e and glycerin, further promote hydration and are essential in replenishing damaged, dry skin. Moisturize twice daily with a dry skin lotion, ointment, cream or moisturizer. Body and face moisturizers for dry skin should be applied within 5 minutes of getting out of the bath/shower to lock in moisture. Use a body and face wash for dry skin prior to applying your moisturizer.
