Dermatologist Tips for Managing Your Child's Eczema & Dry Skin

To help manage you or your child’s eczema and dry skin, dermatologists often recommend these tips:

  • Bathe or shower in lukewarm (not hot) water for no longer than 5 to 10 minutes
  • Use a gentle, soap-free and fragrance-free cleanser
  • Dry skin by dabbing with a towel instead of rubbing
  • Keep your nails trimmed to avoid further disrupting skin if scratching
  • Use a laundry detergent made for sensitive skin and avoid scented fabric softeners and dryer sheets
  • Avoid carpets, pillows, and duvets containing feathers
  • Avoid itchy fabrics (wool, rough fabrics). Use fabrics with fibers, such as cotton or linen
  • Keep temperature and humidity levels comfortable at home
  • Help prevent dry skin by hydrating with a moisturizer at least twice a day
