Self Evaluation Techniques

How can you tell a suspect lesion apart from an ordinary mole?
The ABCDE and "The Ugly Duckling" methods are recognized and used by dermatologists. They can help you to identify suspect lesions with a naked eye.

They are not a substitute for a clinical examination that you get from your dermatologist once a year, however, they can help you keep track of the sudden or drastic changes in color or shape on pre-existing moles. In the case of a suspect mole, consult your dermatologist to provide a qualified diagnosis. Most importantly, don’t forget to wear sunscreen!

The ABCDE method:

A spot/mole can be judged as suspect if it presents one of the ABDCE criteria or any other anomaly.

The Ugly Duckling Method

A person's moles are often similar in appearance; they look similar in shape, color and thickness. A new spot/mole can be considered suspect if it has a different appearance from other moles: known as “The Ugly Duckling”.

Skin Cancer Screening

Because most skin cancer are curable if detected early, make your sure that a dermatologist checks your skin every year.
