Sensitive Skin
In industrialized countries, a large number of people encounter problems of skin discomfort and claim to have sensitive skin. These signs range from sensations of tightness, stinging, itching or burning to erythemas (localized or widespread redness), irritation or dryness.

Aggravating factors:
The mechanisms governing sensitive skin are still not completely clear. It is thought that the skin's threshold of tolerance is lowered and that the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis, becomes abnormally permeable.

Sensitive skin has trouble defending itself from external assaults that are usually well tolerated, e.g. exposure to harsh weather conditions, unsuitable cosmetics, pollution, hormonal changes, sudden changes in diet, depilatory or peeling procedures and acne treatments.

Each new assault further weakens the barrier function of the skin.

"Sensitive skin is skin that is easily irritated and hyper-reactive to physical or chemical substances. It can also be caused by Rosacea, Atopic Dermatitis, Eczema or Psoriasis, which can result in persistent symptoms that include rashes, redness, itchiness and irritation."

What you observe:
Your skin is dull, it lacks suppleness. It feels withered.
"My skin feels like a stiff mask when I talk or laugh." "My skin looks faded. Its' not plump and is lifeless."

What’s happening inside your skin:

Dry skin. If it contains less than 10% water, the hydrolipidic film cracks, becomes rough and permeable. The epidermis hardens. The skin loses its elasticity and suppleness. It is dehydrated.

What you observe:
Your skin shows signs of aging caused by lack of moisture: for example, you have tiny wrinkles particularly around the eye contour.
"My skin feels tight around the eyes, it’s all wrinkled." "My skin is so stiff it shows marks from my finger tips if I touch it."

What’s happening inside your skin:

Skin dehydratation. Dehydrated skin lacks water as it does not retain it. The major abnormality observed in the stratum corneum is the decrease in NMF's (Natural Moisturizing Factors). This physiological imbalance shoud be corrected using an exterior moiturizing source capable of diffusing the elements necessary for long-term hydration. UV rays and particularly UVA rays which intensify the dehydration process and promote the onset of wrinkles and brown spots, are also contributing factors. Talk to your dermatologist about it.
