Biomedic LHA Peel Webcast Questions & Answers

Below please find answers to questions asked during the webcast on June, 19 2007.

1. If a patient has had 4 MicroPeel Plus already this year, can they start this platform since there's a 6 peel with chemical limit a year?
If a patient has had 4 MicroPeel Plus already this year, it is acceptable to have them use one LHA Peel Platform (4-6 LHA peels) and then maintain their skin the remainder of the year with chemical-free MicroPeels.
2. How long would a patient have to wait inbetween series to start another 4-6 series treament if they have more age spots or brown spots that still need to be treated? Example: patient receives 6 treatments of LHA peel and still has some brown spots to work on. Would we start another series and when?
How long to have a patient wait between a series of 4-6 LHA peels is at the physician's discretion. If resting a patient's skin, it is always good idea to perform chemical-free Micropeels with dermaplaning and CO2 to continue to work on improving hyperpigmentation problems. Additionally, add Biomedic Conditioning Gel or Conditioning Gel Plus (BID - twice daily) to the patient's home program. Keep the patient on their LHA pre-treatment products (as tolerated) in between LHA peel series.
3. How longs does the peel stay on? No washing off? What do you apply post peel?
The LHA peel stays on once it is applied - it is not rinsed off and it is self-neutralizing (do not use a fan - this could impact the effectiveness of the LHA peel). Thermal Spring Water can be used to gently remove the Gentle Soothing Ointment used in the outer canthus of the eyes and on the lips pre-LHA peel. Post-peel it is recommended to not apply any products until the next morning. Products tend to reactivate the heat sensation from the LHA peel. Instruct patients to bring a large floppy hat to wear home to protect them from the sun and or use a mineral makeup with SPF. For comfort purposes, if the patient is uncomfortable due to a heated or warm sensation from the LHA peel, instruct to gently rinse their face with the Toleriane Cleansing Bar and cool tap water as needed.
4. What if dryer skin types feel they are not getting enough hydration either pre or post peel, can we add in a moisturizer pre peel or something such as toleriane or Extra Rich post peel?
If a patient is experiencing dry skin always add extra moisture by using Extra Rich Moisturizer, Potent C 10.5%, Redermic, Nutritic, C-Recovery, etc.
5. Once they are finished with the series of peel do you put your clients back on their regular products as before?
This is a decision that together you (the skncare expert), the physician and the patient will make in order to plan the best program for each patient. It is perfectly acceptable to stay on the LHA products as tolerated.
6. Is this peel better than the MPP for acne?
The LHA Peel Platform clinical studies for acne have not been completed to date. The MicroPeel Plus (MPP) has always been known as "the best peel for acne" because of its antibacterial properties. The MPP can also be used on FitzPatrick Skin Types I-IV and also to spot treat acne lesions.
7. If LHA (pre, post and peel itself) sold as a package what would be the retail suggested price?
Pricing is going to vary from region to region. LRP always recommends to keystone (double) the wholesale costs for home products. The LHA peel is epidermal so keep the price of each LHA peel in the same price range as the MicroPeel and MicroPeel Plus. It might be savvy and a good incentive to offer a limited time "Introductory Special" to encourage patients to try the new LHA Peel Platform.
8. Will the patient peel? If yes, how long after treatment?
Expect the amount and duration of peeling to vary from patient to patient. Sometimes patients peel after their first 5%LHA peel and frequently they do not. Either response is totally normal. Since this is an epidermal peel, the peeling is generally white flaky skin and will last a few days. Peeling tends to begin in about 3-5 days.
9. Can you dermaplane prior to treatments or in between, or no dermaplaning during the 4-6 peels?
For an existing patient that is accumstomed to dermaplanng, I would certainly dermaplane (do a MicroPeel) prior to starting the at home LHA program. Dermaplaning is not recommended on the day of any LHA peel. As in he past, our company policy is not to combine peels on any given day.
10. Can patients integrate Active C and other products along with the post procedure products?
Yes, as needed. It is probably best to begin post-LHA peel products as recommended and then to add C products as tolerated.
11. Would you ever keep a patient at 5% instead of titrating them to the 10% Peel?
Absolutely. Titrating to a 10% LHA peel is totaling on an as tolerated per patient basis. Do you recommend not applying spf after a treatment? SPF (immediately post-LHA peel) tends to enhance the heat sensation in the skin and be somewhat irritating. Mineral makeup (with a SPF) is generally well tolerated immediately post-LHA peel.
12. How many layers should you apply of the LHA?
The endpoint of the LHA peel is not measured by layers, but rather volume. The first time a patient has a 5% LHA peel it is recommended that no more than 1/2 of the vial is appliedthis is considered the endpoint for the first peel. Subsequent peels will depend upon patient tolerance. With physician approval, it is acceptable to use any remaining LHA peel solution on the neck, chest arms, etc.
